Please share with us more about your career path and how you created License2Kari.
My husband and I became part-owners of Buck & Doe’s Mercantile in San Antonio approximately 5 years ago. At that time, I had never really shot a gun or even cared about the gun range itself. I was more involved with purchasing for the boutique. Approximately six months after opening, I decided to take a handgun lesson. I realized “Hey, this is fun and I’m pretty good at it!”. From there, I decided to pursue my instructor certifications in order to teach others to shoot. I was a music educator and pianist for the last 20 years and teaching is a passion of mine so this was another venue to enable me to teach. I believe there are a number of correlations between shooting and playing piano which may explain my natural inclination to shoot well such as dexterity, eye/hand coordination, cadence, etc.
Why do you believe it is important for people (and women in particular) to learn how to shoot?
I believe it’s important for people and women in particular to be able to defend themselves and execute their 2nd amendment right. In this time we live, we don’t get to choose when we are a victim – perpetrators get that choice. I’m willing to defend myself or loved ones so I can continue to be a mom, a wife and a daughter. So many women are apprehensive when it comes to guns but when they attend my beginner’s class, they realize it’s actually fun and they always leave empowered and wanting to know “What’s next?”!
When did you start learning self defense and what advice do you have for women who are considering what kind they should learn?
I would encourage women to find a local shooting club near them to participate in training with other like-minded women. I am a chapter leader for The Well-Armed Woman in San Antonio which is a national organization that empowers and educates women. I am also a member of A Girl and a Gun club.
What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
No one is a special snowflake. 😉 We all have issues we deal with but we are never alone in our journey.
